A NEW TOMORROW - A BOOK BY JEFF APTER

Former Rolling Stone Editor Jeff Apter will soon release a new book on Silverchair called "A New Tomorrow" which is a rewrite of his previous tome on the band that was published 3 years ago. While it’s not an official biography and the bandmembers have not yet read it, we thought you might be interested to hear a bit more about this book so heeeeeeere's Jeff...

What were your reasons for writing another Silverchair book? So much has happened to the band, collectively and individually, since 2003, when my first book was published, that it seemed a real oversight not to at least update it. But as I started to re-enter the world of Silverchair, I found myself interviewing people I’d missed the first time around, as well as learning about the new album. The book took on a whole new life. It’s radically different — and I think a lot better — than Tomorrow Never Knows.

How different is this book to Tomorrow Never Knows? If the book was a car, all that would be left of the original is the interior. It’s a good 80-something pages longer, some mistakes have been corrected, people involved early on, such as Phil McKeller and Kevin Shirley, have spoken at length, as have more recent ’Chair insiders such as Paul Mac, David Bottrill and Julian Hamilton. And, of course, there are lengthy new interviews with the band, plus the guy who signed them to Atlantic in the US — even the man many consider to be the world’s leading Silverchair expert. The book has been redesigned and the photo section has been completely updated with some rare shots of the band that cover their entire career. I’m really proud of it.

NEW ALBUM NAME ANNOUNCED

Silverchair have announced that their highly anticipated new album will be called ...

"Young Modern"

All songs for the disc are now fully recorded but the band is waiting for their mixer of choice to finish another album so he can begin work with them. At this stage that's scheduled for January so release in the Australian autumn looks very likely.

CHAIR 'WOW' NEW YORK

Silverchair's sold out shows in New York City this week have attracted some great early reviews.

The New York Post - one of America's biggest newspapers - ran a half feature on the show today under the banner headline "Chairman Wow". In this piece the newspaper's music critic, Dan Aquilante, called the show "sizzling" and said "Johns was incredible". He closed with with some sage advice ... "if Silverchair plays another NYC gig, don't miss it".

Meanwhile, legendary US music scribe, David Fricke, praised the show for Rolling Stone magazine. In his review posted online he noted the absence of any early Chair songs before concluding that "for Silverchair, today is a lot more interesting than "Tomorrow."

The band will travel to Canada over the coming days before returning to the U.S. for shows in Los Angeles on Monday and Tuesday. Limited tickets remain for Monday's date but are selling fast.

DANIEL WINS AT APRA'S

Daniel Johns was voted "Australian Songwriter Of The Year" by his peers at the APRA Awards in Sydney last night. Daniel was unable to collect the prize in person as the band is currently on tour in the U.S.A.. However in a taped acceptance speech Daniel said "it's a real honour to get this award". In the band's absence, Kasey Chambers (herself a multiple award winner on the night) performed a memorable version of "The Greatest View".

DANIEL JOHNS SWEEPS APRA NOMINATIONS

The work of Silverchair's, Daniel Johns, has received further accolades in this year's APRA Awards which recognize achievements in Australian songwriting.

In addition to making the shortlist for "Songwriter Of The Year" and "Most Performed Work", Daniel has had two of his songs ("The Greatest View" and "Without You") make it into the top five contenders for "Song Of The Year". He is the only writer to receive multiple nominations in this category.

Both of the nominated songs were among the singles lifted from Silverchair's album "Diorama". The disc is currently back in the Australian top 20 more than a year after its release following Silverchair's recent acclaimed national tour.

Daniel Johns is currently overseas and is about to embark on a series of international concerts with his band. He will be unable to attend the APRA Awards (which happen in Sydney on May 19) but a spokesperson said he was "very pleased" to have his work recognized by fellow Australian songwriters through these nominations.

TRIPLE J'S HOTTEST 100 RESULTS

If there was any doubt that 2002 ended up being a good year for Silverchair in Australia, the results of Triple J's annual listener poll yesterday confirmed it. No other artist had more songs make the "Hottest 100" list than Silverchair with five entries on the chart. "The Greatest View", "Without You", "Luv Your Life", "Across The Night" and "World Upon Your Shoulders" all making the list. Thanks to all the members of the LAS and other Silverchair supporters who voted for this.

DIORAMA VOTED ALBUM OF THE YEAR

"Diorama" has been voted Album of the Year by the listeners of Triple J. The result places "Diorama" ahead of great albums like "Highly Evolved" (The Vines), "By The Way" (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and "A Rush Of Blood To The Head" (Coldplay).

DIORAMA BREAKS RECORDS

Here in Australia, Silverchair's "Diorama" is now officially the fastest selling album of their entire career.

The widely acclaimed disc went past triple platinum sales (210,000 copies) today - only eight and half months after it was initially released. By comparison, Silverchair's debut CD "frogstomp" took almost a year to reach this point. Its' follow up, "Freak Show", got there after two years while 1999's "Neon Ballroom" is only now on the verge this sales level.

These unprecedented sales are all the more remarkable given the album's radical shift in musical direction. "Diorama" sees songwriter, Daniel Johns, intentionally discarding most of the heavy rock riffs that had become the group's trademark and experimenting with more melodic and orchestral stylings.

It has also been achieved in spite of the fact that the band has not been able to play any Australian concerts since the album's release due to health problems.
